hide the id extension

Hello

I want to hide the id extension: [U]page.php[COLOR=”Red”]?year=1[/COLOR][/U]
in the browser url to show something a bit more freindly like: [U]page.php[COLOR=”red”]/year1[/COLOR][/U]

I heard that it is better for seo practice and search engines and that it is just a little more secure.

I have done a big search on the web about this. Time and time again it is mentioned to use .htaccess. My website is hosted for free and they do not allow me to change anything with .htaccess.

Is there another way to do this?

@MindzaiMar 10.2009 — You could route all of your traffic through a single controller script which examines the urls and dispatches requests accordingly, but without mod_rewrite you are going to have to accept some level of compromise, ie URLs like domain.com/index.php/my/route/to/file.

Are you talking about using javascript or php?

I am not too concerned about the security as the sensitive pages are protected. I would just like to have a clean looking and search freindly url.
