Why to use PHP?

@toicontienFeb 13.2009 — #With PHP 5, object oriented programming in PHP is not only vastly improved, but is now mature enough for developers to use many of the programming patterns associated with traditional OOP languages like Java. There are a slew of frameworks out there. The one I've had experience with is Code Igniter, which we used for Motortopia, a social networking site.

Another positive thing? PHP is free. You aren't tied to proprietary software and all the money it takes to maintain it.

If you don't want OOP, you can use procedural code. You can start out with procedural code for a "quick and dirty" implementation, and when the problem becomes too big, switch to OOP.

Really, the fact remains that both .NET (which is a framework as compared to PHP which is a language), Java and PHP can get you what you want. If you write PHP code, how well will it integrate with the existing applications in your company, and the existing data storage media?

Will it save you time?

Will it save you maintenance headaches for the future?

If you can answer those questions in a positive manner towards PHP, then you've got a good reason to switch. If not, stick with what you're already using --- unless what you're already using isn't working.
