Upload and download files

I have an Intranet site that you can upload files and download files using Windows workstations and servers. Some of the files are as big as 100 mb. A 100 mb file takes about 10 minutes to upload. The customer wants me to expedite download and upload speed. Please advise if speed of upload and download is dependent on the environment? Basically it is relying on client bandwidth speed and server bandwidth speed?

@6StringGeekFeb 10.2009 — It depends on a whole myriad of factors including network bandwidth, network utilization, how many people are using that particular server at any given time etc.

10 mins for 100MB file on a 10/100MB LAN is s-l-o-w. You could move those docs to a different server that isn't used, and check your network utilization. If your LAN and the customer's nic supports 100MB you should switch the customer to 100MB.

There are a lot of other factors that go into this...cpu utilization...disc access times...mtu size etc.

I tried other web servers and clients in my intranet environment and it seems to always be (for 100 mb) around 8 to 10 minutes for uploading using PHP or Cold Fusion as my server sides. The download speeds are a little quicker.
