Blocking Requests

Hi,

I have a directory on my site that has been removed since the content is no longer needed. It appears several people have found images in that directory (e.g. through google image searches) and linked directly to them.

As a result, my log files are filling up with lots of 404 errors from people linking to the old images.

Is there a way (e.g. using .htaccess or apache config) to prevent all access to files in a given directory? Ideally, I’d like some sort of solution stops filling my log files with 404 errors for this directory.

If it matters, I’m using Drupal 5 to run the site.

@LeeUJan 08.2009 — You can use the Google webmaster tool to remove the images from their search engines. You can also contact the other sites and tell them you have removed the images, or set-up a redirect page.

@rgraves2authorJan 09.2009 — Thanks. Putting up an apache redirect for everything in that directory was one idea I had earlier. I may end up implementing that.

I've used Google's Webmaster tools to remove the directory already. I read on yahoo's web site that they don't have a similar service to request removals.

I'll see how it goes.

@LeeUJan 09.2009 — I have that problem myself and it's just something you deal with, like getting someone else's old telephone number.
