dreamweaver server-side shortcomings

hi guys,

I’m relatively new to server-side development, I edit files in dwcs3 and have found the built in “server behaviors” to be rather lacking. I’ve read around on the net, lurked forums, etc and it seems a lot of people find the DW server behaviors (and the code they write) rather brittle and prefer to write their own server side code. I agree, and am working my ass off to improve writing php by hand as quickly as possible, and have learned a lot, but I still have some questions.

  • 1.

Since it seems a lot of people don’t really like server behaviors, are there any tools out there on the net to help with these processes, or any you would particularly recommend? Any other really good learning resources

  • 2.

What, if any are the most useful uses for the built in server behaviors? Very simple projects? Testing?

  • 3.

A current project I’m working on is fairly simple, the backend allows users to register/ login etc., gain access to restricted pages and posts, and maintain a sort of “my profile” page where members can adds favorite movies and such to their profile data. I seem to be able to put this together with bindings and server behaviors, but I’m concerned that the code DW is writing behind the scenes is too brittle or could be potentially messed up if the site starts working with large amounts of data.

  • I feel like there is a better way to do this than just point and click server behaviors, so aside from writing this out by hand (im trying ? )do you have any suggestions for the best way to put something like this together or resources for learning to do so?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

@cinematic_jesiDec 01.2008 — To tell you the truth -- I use Dreamweaver's code quite often, why rebuild the wheel? And then I add my own code to it, to make it work how I want too.

What I found learning web development is that learning the code and what it does, prior to using "out of the box" code", was the best way to go because chances are you will need to somewhat modify it.

With that said, I've used WebAssist for these type of apps and found them to be quite useful (after I learned what the heck I was doing).

In addition, I've found that Lynda dot Com was a great resource for learning PHP and any book by David Powers is a great resource.

@toro999authorDec 01.2008 — cool, thanks for the responses guys. I've been working on writing the code by hand or at least learning to tweek the server behaviors myself, so until I get better I'll just do that, Ill definitely check out those resources.

    thanks again
