Google Analytics vs SmartStats …

Hi,

I have a site where the hosting company uses SmartStats to track visitors, it is pretty good and has a lot of info. I also have the same site setup on Google Analytics. What I am trying to understand is the difference in Visits each one is giving me, Google is about 1/2 of what the SmartStats says for the same time period (not looking at absolute unique, but total visits).

Does anyone have an idea why Google would be so much lower? I am just trying to understand the difference because I want the client to have access to both reports but want to be able to explain the difference. I thought I had read somewhere that google is much more conservative in what they call a ‘visit’, don’t know if that is true or not and if so why …

Anyway, thanks for any input or references to more information!

@chadstenOct 28.2008 — Possibly Google is realizing the difference between bots and actual browsers. Or Google ignores its own crawls, and crawls your site a whole lot. Either way, I would probably go with a stat that is more accurately common. Hope this helps.
