PFR Please help me understand

So I would like to add some nice fonts to my site and I have been reading on some of the help sites about Portable Font Resource. I went window shopping for some fonts and found a few that I like but they were not in a .pfr . I questioned the company selling these fonts and they responded, ‘PFR’ (Portable Font Resource) is a format you convert ‘to’, not a format unto itself.
What does this mean?
How do I go about purchaseing fonts or learning how to “convert” them into a pfr. What am I missing?

@opifexOct 09.2008 — ok, embedded fonts - .eot and .pfr

haven't even thought about this topic in several years for one simple reason- only IE supports this and only using ActiveX.

microsoft has the .eot convertor (maybe it's still available) and bitstream.com was the source for .pfr conversion.

as far as purchasing fonts goes.... why? there are thousands of open source truetype and opentype fonts available.

bottom line on fonts... the only fonts that will display on a users browser are the fonts that the user has installed on his computer. you can check to see what comes with the various windows packages here and here is Mac OSX Tiger. For Linux, well depends on the flavor - check versions here.

as you will see, there are MANY font options available - and of course you call replacements in your css just in case that the "preferred font" for your design is not available.

happy font choosing!
