2Mbit going fast and realy SLOW.

Hi.

I’m on a 2mbit line. The connection is great. But sometimes the internett is going realy SLOW….From 300-200kbsec to 0.5kbsec and the it will go like that for a long time. I’m at a school and I’m not the only guy on the line, but the connection shouldn’t be THAT bad! How can it change so much? Can it be because of some programs? Like Nortan Antivirus Auto-Protection…? Need some tips ?

It's wireless network connection...

@PeOfEoOct 14.2003 — #It would be because you are on a fractional t1 number one. Also it could be a high number of downloads and web aps running. Smack your class mates and tell them to turn of kazaa. Also it could be slow ports. If you are trying to use a program like kazaa aim or something else it needs to connect over a port and a whole lot of schools block up their ports completly or they might have one or two open but those are very slow. The only ports usually open on school networks are the http ones. The tend to close up ftp and smtp. My school also blocks ftp headers (those jerks!). Those are just my ideas. It could also be your school computers processes etc. Next time you are at school go to www.dslreports.com/stest and pick out a server and run a speed test to see what your dl and upload rates are. My cable line died like two weeks ago btw, the cable company was doing work on the line and did not fix it properly and did not tell me and I had to wait a day for them to come out there and figure out what it was.

EDIT: Since it is wireless make sure there are no microwaves around the router or your computer ?

@Aronya1Oct 15.2003 — #First thing that pops into my mind is somebody is stealing bandwidth. Or even if it's not being stolen, there could be people hogging it up. Like PeOfEo said, you might have a bunch of other people downloading music, etc.

Is this an event you can duplicate? Is there a certain time of day when it happens, or is it totally random? Try moving to another location the next time it happens, where you would be connecting thru a different wireless node, and see if anything changes.

One thing you can do that at least won't hurt;

1. Set your Temp Internet Files limit to 5MB. That's still a lot of files, and anything more than that will only slow your system down. I don't care what MS claims. I do tech support for a living, and this is the number one reason for poor Internet performance.
