Can someone help me figure this out

I own a “SimpleMachines Forum” in the forum it has a option to have a javascript popup to preview more smilies, so iam working on the javascript window that pops up i want to make a drop down menu to catergorize the smilies, i have the drop down menu made but when i copy the < a href tag it doesnt post the bb code to the orignal message window if someone is willing to help i can post the codes i just need to figure out how to make it on click send the info back to the orignal window
