creating e-learning site : suggestions ?

Hi all,,
I was asked to make a full e-learning site for engineering students, i’ll start designing the site after 2 months, so i have enough time to get the knowledge i lack in order to make this site. i’m not a web designer but i’ve a good background & I’ve made some good interfaces previously with flash 4.

i want you to help me choose the software to use to get the following :

# a site with online courses that can’t be downloaded or even browsed offline , it mustn’t be downloaded the cache either.

the site will be designed for dial-up users, so it mustn’t be heavy or have a large size.

the course it self is consisted of some interactive slides with voice & annonations. there’s a program called camtasia studio will be used for some courses which explains engineering oriented progams such as MATLAB.

Now what do i need to make a good secured content ?
i’m thinking of Flash and/or Adobe Live motion but are they able to make secured pages like i want ?.. how to secure the courses ?.. the problem is that i want the courses to be loaded somewhere on the user’s pc b4 he plays them, in order to have them flow correctly with no cuts & errors. but i want them to be deleted after that.

not all the tutorials must be flash, some of them may not be interactive so we can make them as quicktime movies.. but how to make quicktime movies that are not to be saved in the cache ? i hope you can help me guys, ask any questions you want if i didn’t explain it well. and tell me all your suggestions please.

thanks

@AdamGundryOct 13.2003 — Anything that is downloaded to the browser normally can be saved. Your best bet is probably to use Flash, a Java applet or similar to create an interface for downloading content that does not store data on the client hard drive, then they are basically limited to taking screen shots. If you must save to the hard drive, you might be able to encrypt the data somehow, but how secure it would be is debateable - should foil the casual user, though.

Of course, you should be careful of accessibility legislation with this project. Under UK and US law you may be required to make the content accessible to disabled users, which Flash is not particularly good at. (See http://www.macromedia.com/macromedia/accessibility/features/flash/ for more info on making Flash accessible).

yes but sometime one see "quicktime" or "realplayer" movies that are viewed online only & can't be found in cache.. isn't this possible ?

about securing pages, i've once seen a site with pdf files for browsing only, i didn't find these files in the cache after that !

about "accessibility legislation", we don't have laws like this here in Egypt.

thank you for replying.

guys if you have any suggestions or info plz tell me.

@AdamGundryOct 14.2003 — For Quicktime and PDF files, you can usually right-click on the link to them and click "save target as..". RealPlayer files can be more difficult (if they contain streamed content), but it can be done.

Given what you've said you want to do, I think Flash is probably your best option.

P.S. Just because you aren't legally required to make pages accessible, that doesn't mean you shouldn't do so.

@achillesauthorOct 14.2003 — i found out there's a good one.. macromedia breeze, easily converting powerpoint to flah, i hope employers can provide me access to this program.

about accessibility, regarding number of internet users & tendancy of people with disabilities to study mechanical engineering here in my country i can say that making the site accessibile will be worthless. of course we have disabled mechanical engineering students, but their disabilities are not of the type that would prevent them from brwosing a site.

@Robert_WellockOct 15.2003 — Thus I can only assume from that statement that Egypt is backwards with regards to web accessibility, you cannot predict that a mechicnal engineer would not have difficulty with surfing a website.

I am sure many 'normal' people would have difficulty navigating through the Cisco CCNA Online delivered course, in fact I don't know anyone who has not had issues even when they have used the site for over three months.

Believe me, any Real Media, Secure PDF, or QuickTime movie you place on the web and let me view in my own browser I will be able to either edit or save to my HDD.

i know but this requires some efforts which i don't think all of the guys can do. ( i mean the users of our site). i just want the simple sequrity, a course that cannot be saved directly usinhg a button or a flash-grabber programs.

about accessibility again, we don't even have regulations yet for even e-commerce ? (but they're working on it) . don'tt forget it's a 3rd world country & we don't even have a big percentage of computer users (not internet users).

but as i said, a mechanical engineer with a hand, an eye..and an ear will be able to browse it..it's going to be a simple site.

but regarding ppl with disabilities, we have laws & regulations for them to guarantee their right in work, education, & even entertainment.
