can "ajax" be used as a verb?

this isn’t a technical question, but im looking for opinions.

is saying something like “just ajax in the xml, and cache it to a string” ok?

-or- does it really bother you when you see that?

personally, i hated the word at first, since it doesn’t really mean anything, but have found myself gradually using it more and more.

related: is it still ajax if you consume json or csv or anything besides XML?

i still can’t stand it when i see something like “does anyone have an ajax that will…”

please weigh in, all responses welcome.

@Jeff_MottSep 10.2008 — "AJAX" itself is already only a buzz word. All it really is, is a regular HTTP request that's initiated by JavaScript. But if you can compress that whole sentence down to a single word without losing any clarity, then that word has staying power.

Using "AJAX" as a verb should be judged in the same way. If it lets you be more succinct, then it's doing good work, but if not, then you should cut it from your writing.

@DokSep 10.2008 — I don't like it either but find that most people understand what it covers like

"A solution would be to do this or you can do this using Ajax" and so it saves a lot of explanation. I don't like it though...and I would hate if you ajaxed something ?

From what I've seen aournd the net you don't have to capitalize AJAX - you can just write Ajax...still don't like it.

It depends on whether you accept people who are too lazy to capitalise an acronym or not. Personally I always capitalise it, but then again, I also try not to use "netspeak" either.

@toicontienSep 10.2008 — I've read where both "ajax" and "AJAX" are perfectly fine. When you are talking about Asynchronous JavaScript And Xml, the technology, then you want AJAX.

We'll use AJAX to show the login form.
When you are talking about it as a verb, or as an idea, then use Ajax.

We'll make it look like one of those Ajax sites.
We can Ajax that in instead of reloading the page.
@toicontienSep 10.2008 — Or look at it this way, if you can replace "ajax" with "Asynchronous JavaScript and XML" in a sentence, and the sentence still makes sense, then use AJAX. Otherwise use Ajax.

The best solution might be always to use the uppercase acronym, but with a suitable suffix appended. Both the following suffixes are already in common usage:

"We can AJAXify this application" or "the site's operation was streamlined after its AJAXification".

@slaughtersSep 10.2008 — My favorite use of the word was when Ricky Ricardo used to say,

"Lucy ! Ajax'd you and Ajax'd you to clean up this mess !"

@rnd_meauthorSep 10.2008 — good replies guys.

looks like we don't like it, but it does work.

that's kinda how i felt.

i still think its way over-applied, and inherently meaningless, but that doesn't stop me from using it.

glad to know i am not alone.

now all i need is a t-shirt that says "AJAX this"...

Success!
