showing content in a content area

I have a site where I have category links showed on the left. What I want to do is when you click a link, have it query my database (using php and mysql) to show subcategories on the right, that would then link to a new page. Could someone help me to do this (via ajax would be cool)?

@DokSep 07.2008 — Thats not really something wihch can be made in a matter of minutes. Try one of these Ajax tutorials first to get a grasp of how Ajax works.
