can I locate selected text

Hi guys,

Can anybody help me with this one:
I have to determine somehow the position of selected text. Or at least to know if my selected word is on top of or under the imaginary half page line (with this I mean half of visible page – the line is always in the same position, no meter on position of scrollbar). So, I don’t need character offset, I need real position on screen or at least simple location (up or down).
Also I need solution for this in IE and Firefox.
