Floating a hideable DIV

I have a large photograph of a school group:

When you click on a face further details are revealed in the form of a <div> element.

However the revealed element always appears in the same place relative to the photograph (ie it moves with horizontal and vertical scrolling).

How can I make it stay in the same place on the screen? I have tried including grabbed coordinates (function in external js file) in the positioning of the DIV (external css file) but it seems to have no effect.

Any ideas?
