Learning tools suggestions for PHP?

I have my own e-commerce site that i have been working on building and designing. I am using oscommerce, a pre-written code for e-commerce stores, but i want to learn more.

I would LOVE to be able to code from scratch and KNOW what i am doing when i add contributions and such.

Right now I feel like I am understand thelanguage but can’t speak it. Like when you take spanish in high school. When someone writes it down, I can get the gyst of it, but i could NEVER hold up a conversation.

So any suggestions? php for dummies? Ect?

@FrankTheTankAug 09.2008 — I have used Leaning PHP, an O'Reilly book. I'm plannig on getting Programming PHP as well. Tons of good info, but if you're learnig PHP as a first language, O'Reilly may not be the books for you. I've heard some other series are more friendly for programming beginners. There's no "Head First" book on PHP yet, but it's supposed to be out this fall. I have Head First Java, and I like the unconventional style. I think it's a good option for noobs and more experienced coders as well.

Get a trial account at http://safaribooksonline.com/ and "test drive" some books to find the one(s) that suit you best, then buy those you want to keep a hard copy of.

@lindsayanngauthorAug 10.2008 — thanks so much!! i feel like i have come SOO far in the past few months. Last year, when i decided i wanted a website, i actually didnt even know how to get a website from my cpu to the internet (bad, i know) I knew SOME html just from when i was a kind making websites for fun on frontpage..

so anyways, i hired someone (atfirst) to setup my website for me. I then realized that he was teaching himself as he went, and i figured if he could do it, i could. I have to say, i was SCARED to touch anything on my site. I didnt know how to set up a local server for php sites, so was working live.

Anyways, since then i got a BUNCH of books on oscommerce (my shopping cart software) and have been able to make LOTS of changes.. but now i would like to be able to understand the actual code and be able to write my own code for any issues that i might want fixed, without having to turn to pre-wriiten (and sometimes badly written) user contributions or paying someone else/

So thanks again. I am going to look into those books.. I just got my 25% off birthday coupon from boarders.. HOPE THEY HAVE THEM.

I understand the feeling!

A good book that I enjoyed was Developing with MYSQL and PHP. (I'm pretty sure that was the name.)

My only advice to you is write write write!!!

Also, look up those little words that we so commonly pass by - variable, class, etc.

Good Luck!

@shivammehta2103Jan 10.2023 — As the PHP is evolving day by day, there are so many tools are also coming in the web development market.

As there are more options, developers are getting confused on which tool to use while developing their project.

I personally faced the similar situation where I got stuck while choosing the best and free PHP code editor because there are so many options are available, that time I got roaming around internet to find the perfect resource and I found this amazing article on [best PHP editors for web developer](https://www.XXXtvasoft.com/blog/10-best-free-php-code-editors-for-web-developers/). It was really helpful for me so I bookmarked it and now sharing the link here so our community can also get benifited from it.

Thanks.
