Noob trying to do php – help please

Hello, i am an uber noob when it comes to php, i was wandering if there is a way of viewing the devolpment in dreamweaver in a designer type view as the user would see it, just so i can get an idea of what impact my actions have on the overal site.
Is there a way of doing this in dreamweaver, maybe by importing the rest of the pages, so that they can link together and produce a design view, or connecting to an external database or importing one (mysql).
I have bought a php script that i want to modify heavily.
Thanks in advance

@Mr__E__CrypticAug 07.2008 — I presume you're asking if there's a way of actually executing the PHP script on your local computer. To do this you'll either need to install a server on the machine along with PHP and MySQL, or you can also use a pre-built developer environment. XAMP fro windows is an example.

@Mr__E__CrypticAug 07.2008 — Sorry, if you've already figgured the above out and are asking if you can actually run a working system within the design view of Dreamweaver: not that I'm aware of. You'll have to preview in a browser.

@Mr__E__CrypticAug 07.2008 — Yeah, wampserver will do the job.

@Kyleva2204Aug 07.2008 — OR get a Mac and use TextMate.. That can execute PHP scripts on the fly, because MacOS X is built with PHP and MySQL ?. I love my lil mac.

@MrCoderAug 12.2008 — Mac's make good door stops.

Overpriced, unreliable (From my experience), cant upgrade them and they look awful.

Give me a Linux / Windows box any day.

@Mr__E__CrypticAug 12.2008 — Overpriced, I’d agree with. And I’d say that ‘you get what you pay for’ arguments are fairly redundant in comparing macOS and Windows systems. Extremely powerful systems can be built on windows systems for a fraction of the price of even the most basic configuration of a power mac.

Unreliable; I’d disagree with, but again would be careful with generic comparisons to window systems. I don’t think the huge gap in reliability that Mac proponents would have you believe exists, actually does. Maybe once I would have agreed whole-heartedly, but we’re going back to a time where OS9 and Win98 would have been the comparison. Windows has come on leaps and bounds in stability, as have most Linux distributions in user-friendliness.

With ‘they look awful’ I’m just going to have to disagree, flat out. If there’s one thing Macs currently do better than anyone, it’s style. I hate when I hear people outrightly relegating macs to fashion accessories, but at the same time there is a little truth in it.

Overall I’d agree though, I’ll take a completely customisable system running Ubuntu, Debian or Vista over a Mac any day (maybe excluding the day I’ve a few extra grand lying around, and ABSOLUTLEY nothing else to spend it on).

@drhart4000Aug 13.2008 — I wana see you price me a system identical to say a quad mac pro for the same or less value from a name brand manufacturer. You can't do it, now I'd agree with you could build your own system from non name brand parts and get a somewhat stable system, but it comes down to how long you want it to last and how well it works.

For something that works out of the box and works well, get a mac.

Don't care about reliability, build your own from cheap ass parts.

As far as the operating system there is no way your going to tell me windows is better, mac is built on a very strong foundation (unix). From a guy that works with all three platforms on a daily basis, let me tell you, my preference is Mac, Linux, Windows (in last, especialy with the release of vista).

@Mr__E__CrypticAug 13.2008 — At home, I work on both Vista and Unbuntu.

In work, I use a mixture of XP, Vista, OS9, Tiger & Leopard.

As some one who works with those on a daily basis, let me tell you (? Sorry I couldn't resist), The mac OS in general hasn't got the increased stability or performance over a decent machine running windows that mac lovers would have you believe. Although for performance from a hardware sense, I will admit the Power Mac runs rings round pretty much anything. But at 4 grand odd, I'll do nicely with something that can handle 80% of the workload for 30% of the budget.

The i/eMacs (remember those little eMacs, still have one gathering dust somewhere) have always been a disaster. At well over a grand for an iMac, again I can get similar performance for up to 20 - 30% less.

The wee baby mac books are great little machines, but again: overpriced.

As for the mac book pro, Bought one; a week later it was back with mac for repairs. Got it back, same problem cropped up again a week or two later, sent it back and back and back and back. After about 6 months of that, it finally seemed in working order. Got about another year out of it after that until it hit burn-out level. I don't considder a year and a half odd an acceptable lifespan for something that costs that much.

I have an old Dell laptop I bougth approx 4 years ago (I'm irish, dell are actually still half decent - sometimes - well, 4 years ago anyway ?). I still have it, and running Ubuntu on it, it runs rings round my iMac which is only a couple of months old. Now fair enough, running XP on the same; it barely turns on.

No, I'm not claiming that windows is now STRONGER than mac's OS. I am claiming (in my exerience, anyway) that at this point the two are close to being on par with each other, if not actually there.

If I had to choose a preference in order, then I think I'd go for Linux, Windows, Mac OS

However, for practical reasons I'm usually more tied to (in order) Windows, Mac, Linux.
