Steganography Script

Hiya, How do I create a script, that embeds a secret message inside an image upon clicking a “Add Message” button. Then, upon clicking a “Read Message” button, display the embedded message on screen?

Is it possible to store the message, even if the message is copied, and stored in a new image file?

Cheers

@rootAug 06.2008 — Yes it is possible and it is often associated with pedophiles and sex offenders who pass hidden images and information in images that look harmless.

@SyCoAug 06.2008 — hey . that's a bit harsh casting aspersions against F.Danials like that, after all he may simple be a double agent or international/industrial spy of some kind ?

If you use The GIMP image editor you have to option to add your comments at the time of image creation.

(hey . how do you pronounce you nick anyway?)

I am merely pointing out the facts as they are. Unfortunately that is the fact of the matter. I know it was as subtle as being hit by a bus, but theirs nothing like the truth for dramatic impact.

My nic, . is hard to say, it requires a tongue that is prehensile and flexible enough to twist its way around the 48 letter phonetic equivalent.

I takes on average 3 years to master the first 8 syllables and another several years to learn the remainder.

@SyCoAug 07.2008 — ?

It's always the silent syllables that are hardest to pronounce.

Well when you put it that way, the hiding an image in another image did actually start from a US military application. You know, watching live feeds of other countries on military maneuvers while it is masked as a TV program or something sporty or a weather channel even.

This is why receiving images is dangerous, it would be the easiest thing to hack a PC, upload a set of pictures and let lose a virus to swap the image fields and presto, your hit with lurid pornographic materials and the feds kicking your doors off...

Makes you think don't it...

Yes I live in the "State of the Obvious" where our state coat of arms is an enema and a bat with nails in it.

Whilst on my journeys though, I did find such software on the "Opensource" market.

So perhaps F.Danials would have a quick look see himself.

However, I would err on the side of caution, if he going to use this as a way of sending out secure passwords and such likes embedded into a hidden image field, I would urge him to think again as this poses a risk because image readers would be able to access this layer.

I do not see what the issue is with sending emails using a cryptographic method. It would be less painful, it is secure and if MR Paranoia is sat on F.Danials shoulder gnawing at his left earlobe then he may want to be assured that only people with the respective key can open it to read.

Yes F.Danials could send messages in this way but it will not provide any security whatsoever. Only a visual one, computers see all.

Store Passwords? - Where did I state that? ?

I'm not to bothered about security, I want people to view my messages, but only using the encrypter/decrypter.

My point being that for whatever you use this obfuscation for, it will only provide a "Visual" element and not one that will hide the "Message" because computers see all of the file data!!!

If you want to encrypt / decrypt messages, go for a PGP encryption and only give the key to those who you want to have the message opened by.

The only way I can see you pulling this off is to have the image and submit to the server and the server returns the hidden part of the message.

If you encrypt a message with PGP you don't give them the key, they use their own.

Never used it so I wouldn't know, TYVM.

Still, this has led to me finding some really useful sites that have encryption functions / scripts and other encoding stuff that are not only available in JavaScript but also PHP. See My Signature for a link to the AES-256.
