Retrieving source code from http request

Is there a way to use Javascript to retrieve the returned source-code from an http-request.

For example, if I call [url]http://www.google.com[/url] using some Javascript function, I want the HTML-code to be stored in a text variable.

note that for your call to work, the address bar must already be at google.
