Directory Naming Conventions

Can you use @ symbol in a file or directory structure?
Example: /usr/local/data/this@here/

I was told by a S.A. not to use it, but he did not explain why.

@PeOfEoOct 03.2003 — You can use it for an ftp folder or something where the directorys are user specific, but do not do it unless you are using a set username to access the directory.

@jennAshtonauthorOct 03.2003 — Why can't you use it for regular web or http directory?

@PeOfEoOct 03.2003 — You can use it but those are reserved for password protect directorys and such. If you used it, it could potentially cause problems. There are certain characters that you just cannot use in directory paths or url's or you can only use them on certain occasians.
