Pop up for IE6 users only

Is it possible to have a pop-up window come up for IE 6 users only using an
“IF lte IE6 statement” in the header?

Our new site is not IE6 or lower compatible and need to encourage upgrading. Most of our clientele are over 40 and would not know how to upgrade unless links were readily executable.

Thanks.

@Declan1991Jun 19.2008 — What doesn't work about it?

I think this will do it:
<!--[if lt IE 6]>
<script type="text/javascript">
alert("This is IE 6 or less");
</script>
<![endif]-->

@AsperonJun 19.2008 — what about the site is not IE6 compatible, sometimes it only takes small changes to fix certain things. If you really need to check http://www.mozilla.org/docs/web-developer/sniffer/browser_type.html try this link

@KDLAJun 19.2008 — That would be really annoying for those that visit your website frequently and have no desire to upgrade....

@txgeekgirlauthorJun 19.2008 — Thank you Dclan - I will test it.

FYI - I have tested and tried to code the site to be IE6 compatible. IE6 is so old that it doesn't support a lot of the newer style of coding and we are not writing two full sites, when just this one - with what is up now - is over 300K lines of code.

@Declan1991Jun 19.2008 — The thing is that it's often slight differences that make the difference. I know of very very few designs that cannot be shown in IE 6. And since a large proportion of your users (certainly more than your Firefox users) will be using IE 6, it's putting you at quite a disadvantage.

@txgeekgirlauthorJun 28.2008 — Dclan - we are using a tabbing system from the js EXT library. it is not compatible with IE6 - neither is our menu. take a look if you want...

@rootJun 28.2008 — You know the saying, you can lead a horse to water...

Basically what people have told you in their responses is a round about way of saying "Don't upset the apple cart.."

You have clients that use both types of browser.

If you are not going to script for both browsers then you should consider using an IE based browser as this ships with every Windows PC.

If you are a business, this can lead to complaints and loss of business.

If you are really insistent on your clients using FireFox browsers, as a gesture to your IE6 / 7 crew, you could present them with "U3 Flash Drives" that allow things like FireFox browser to be installed to and run from the drive... They do not need to install but just "Plug n' Browse!" and as you / your company gave them out, you can set the home page to your site!!!

Hows that ?
