Storing file route in the database

I’ve been asked to do something I have never seen before.
My customer wants for it’s intranet a type file input in the website to let the user look for a document, after the document is found, he wants the route of the file (that currently shows on the “file” text box) to be stored in the database. Never heard of that and don’t know exactly why he wants this, but I wonder if there’s a way to do it. I left the questions for the police, my part is to do the dirty job.
Any tips?
