search engine reindexing

Hello;
I have built a site including all the necessary and important tags for search engine indexing; <title>, <h1>, <h2>, meta tags and repetitive (without overdoing it) keywords in the content. I did feel that I was getting good placement in Google and Yahoo until the client requested I change it up a bit for a broader audience. I have now changed some of the <h2> as well as the <title> tags. Now I am worried that I have damaged the ranking I already had. My question is, will Google and Yahoo crawlers etc go over the site again to catch my new tags? How long should I wait to test the new results??

Thanks

@gbonnetMay 15.2008 — Hi,

For a small site which is not updated too often, it should be fully crawled within a week or 10 days.

Updating the content is important for sure, but for a proper search engines ranking; you will need to get some links to your client site...

@WebJoelMay 15.2008 — Actually, change is good and additional content, best! You want to have good internal links (navigation to other pages in the site), and 'inline-links' are slightly more important than 'modeled lists' (which are important!), as are commonly used in "<ul>"s.

That is to say, maybe you have a unordered-list that includes a link ("<li>") to another page concerning 'internet widgets'. This is good. But if in addition to this, you have a paragraph elsewhere in the site that talks more specifically about 'internet widgets' and includes an inline-link to that page, -THAT counts a bit extra.

Example: Our widgets make excellent gifts, for any occasion. These widgets come in many different sizes and many different colors. And there is a sale this week on our (link here -->) Novelty Internet Widgets, and all this month, shipping is free!
This (above) is called an "inline link" and it is more meaningful than just a "UL" mention of it, as the keywords ("widgets") surrounding it are 'closer to it', ergo, it pertains to the link more meaningfully than a mere UL.

This is just one of many dozen honest, integrity-filled things you can do to improve Google rating/searchability.

Thanks so much

@SEO_guruMay 29.2008 — And Catfish, no matter how well you do on-site SEO work, and even if you end up in the 1st position at Google, positioning and ranking is always subject to change due to both how other web sites manage their SEO for the same keyword phrases , as well as Google routinely tweaking or modifying their algorithms. SEO is an ongoing process.

This includes ongoing work to add new and more content to a site, continue to find new white hat ways to obtain links back to your site, review and reassess relevance and importance of keyword phrases, and all the rest of the most important white has SEO fundamentals.

@WebJoelJun 01.2008 — Beware and be wary of any 'spam' e-mail that you may receive, that promises (for a small $ fee, of course!) to get you X-many (usually, they claim THOUSANDS) of 'hits' from Google, monthly. BEWARE! They are hoax!

Modus Operandi: They buy-up deliquent and abandoned domains, several hundred+ of them by their admission, clean them out and what your money gets are 'backlinks' from these sites to YOUR site, and the 'targeted keywords' (okay, let's call it SPAM!) will grab a Google search parameter and 're-direct' the search to YOUR site! SURE, -you MIGHT get six-thousand or seven-thousand (or MORE!) unique 'hits' from Google searches monthly as per~promised, BUT if you check the analytics for these 'hits', the average 'stay' is usually UNDER ONE MINUTE, meaning that the person landed upon your site 'by accident', and they BACKED OUT immediately! (probably confused why they landed on your site which has/had nothing at all to do with their SEARCH'd terms...)

You don't want thousands of 'hits' if nobody STAYS and visits, possibly buys, reads or (GASP!) BOOKMARKS your site because it is worthwhile and it answered or fulfilled some need that they had in the first place. You want honest visits, not re-directs!

I have received several such 'I saw your web site and wanted to ask you a question' SPAM e-mails recently, forwarded to me by clients of mine whom were 'interested' in what they hucksters had to say... The language used by these con-artists include (paraphrased here) "...we are targeting certain keywords that are present in your site and your competitor's site but WE LIKE YOU BEST, so act quickly blah-blah-blah or, -shall we just move on and contact your competitor and help THEM instead?..."
-Hey, -take that $30 or $40.oo that they would ask for and buy yourself something to reward yourself for being smarter than them, don't throw it away on this sham-scam.
