password prompt

I made a password prompt thing a while ago that submits a form to some php from a javascript prompt. I thought it was a good idea at the time, but it was a pretty dumb idea after all is said and done because it doesn’t asterisk out the letters like a password input does. Is there such thing as a password prompt or a way to make the letters into *’s ?

I’m sorry if this is a dumb question, I just don’t feel like rewriting the thing to an input instead of a prompt right now.

@ZeroKilledMay 08.2008 — there is a prompt that i had seen before that prompt for user and password. but i'm afraid that prompt can't be used on javascript, or at least i has not read a reference that say so. guess that kind of prompt can only be prompted with http communication, not sure.
