str.match(‘S’) regex question

I am stumped by the js “match” function. ‘S’ returned ‘x’ in a regular expression tester but the following code returns ‘null’. Why doesn’t the following code return ‘x’ as expected? I appreciate your advice.
<html>

<body onload=”
var str=’xx’;
document.write(‘str = ‘ + str);
document.write(‘<br>str.match(‘\S’) = ‘ + str.match(‘S’));
// ‘S’ should return any character that is not a white space
“>

</body>

</html>
@ZeroKilledMay 02.2008 — you are passing match's argument as a string when it should be an regular expression object. can't say what happen when you pass a string. thought javascript convert it to regular expression but seem it doesn't. notice the foward slash which indicate it is a regular expression.

<i>
</i>str.match(/S/)
