What would this be called in css?

Hi Everybody

So I finally got a css menu down:

http://www.catalinahotel.com/allie/box.html

I think it’s working normally..but if not and you see errors please feel free to point them out.

So I was thinking of doing something like this (the little white box) when people click on a link:

http://www.standardhotels.com/los-angeles/meetings-events/

Is that a layer? Something you can do in css?

Thank you!!!!

Allie

@dtm32236Apr 16.2008 — The large image box on that site is done with flash. I'm talking about the one that 'slides in' when the page loads - Is that the one you're referring to.

Have you tested in IE6? it doesn't seem to be working for me.

Are you using transparent .png images? IE6 doesn't like these very much, but there are fixes that you can google (search for "transparent png ie6 fix")

@grimmylinaauthorApr 16.2008 — Nope, the bottom one that says "Download"....I guess it's a layer....How would you do that? Or is there a good tutorial to learn?

Ooops, I forgot to upload the ie6 css file. Hopefully it's working now?

You're talking about how "Download" sits over the box like that?

I'd just make a div for the white box, then another one inside of it for the word "download"...

You can make the second div text white, and the background red. Then I'd set position:absolute; and add negative top and left margins (margin:-10px 0 0 -10px).

Does that make sense? Is that what you're looking to do?

It's still not working for me in IE6.

@grimmylinaauthorApr 16.2008 — Yup, that's the right one.

This is what they wrote to someone who said they were having the same problem:

[B]Erick, if you check the FAQs you will find that the problem is due to your using a standalone version of IE6 on the same PC as IE7.

Unfortunately this standalone version thinks that it is IE7 when it comes to conditional comments. As my demonstrations work using conditonal comments to feed one set of html to IE6 and another set to IE7 then they will not work with your set up.

I have two PCs for testing. One with IE7 and the other with IE6 and you can be assured that all demos do work with IE6.

On a third PC I have installed IE7 (Vista) and Microsofts virtual PC to run IE6, and this method does work correctly.

@dtm32236Apr 16.2008 — oh - nice.

I am using a standalone version of IE6 - so that's probably the problem.

@grimmylinaauthorApr 16.2008 — Will I be excluding alot of people by using that?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@dtm32236Apr 16.2008 — No. Pretty much anyone with a standalone version of IE6 uses it only for testing - not surfing. I think you're safe. (Is that what you were asking?)

I implore you, -don't call anything regarding CSS a "layer".. :eek: "Layer" is a Dreamweaver (& proprietary) naming convention and it is just about as reviled as the Netscape "<blink>" tag... :p

The closest equivalent element to a "layer" is a "div".

That second URL when viewed on a Mozilla-family browser with adblock installed, does some very, very unattractive things(!!). That site owner should be advised (and shown) what happens when those links are 'hovered over'... the "block" tab of adblock appears and IF anyone clicks on the link, they are probably ALSO clicking on the 'adblock tab' and this will of course, effectively CLOSE the link/image/whatever! -Not at all friendly or condusive to whatever business is being conducted, to have your "links" close-down on-click just because the user is using a browser/extention of their personal choosing...

@grimmylinaauthorApr 22.2008 — Thanks...I gave up on the css menu when I saw what it looked like in other browsers. It would have been pretty though....if it worked. : )

@dtm32236Apr 22.2008 — Really? Thanks kinda crappy.... stupid IE6.

Well, I thought it worked with non-standalone versions of IE6.

I'd say that if it works on IE6, IE7, and FF (sometimes I'll check safari and opera too)... then you're safe to use it.

It definitely looked really nice, so it's a shame to abandon it after all that work.

@grimmylinaauthorApr 22.2008 — Oh, no problem. I took it down.....but if anyone needs the files to do their own menu then I have them. It was hard to get all the png files but I found an example someone had done online so I do have them all in case anyone is interested.
