Detecting a program on a remote computer, Possible?

I have had people contacting me saying there is a virus on my site but I’ve done countless scans and found nothing…It is all due to the fact that Norton and McAfee are utter garbage.

So I was wondering, is there a way I could add something to detect if a user has one of those programs running and if so to display a message to them about it?

I realize that this is a weird question and the answer very well and most likely is no but I just wanted to ask to make sure.

@samesongMar 21.2008 — Using PHP? Not really. PHP runs on your server.

Using Javascript, you might have better luck. It runs in the clients browser.

Anyway, you don't really want to do this. If a popup is telling you that you have a virus on you machine, it's likely lying to you.

Your best chance would be to trick them into downloading a program and running it on their computer to check; the catch is, if they download and install that program, they have a virus, or something they don't want, by default. Also, you might not want to alert people that you are sneaking stuff on their computer.

Long story short, don't do it... don't even try it.
