Gmail chat, ideas on how it works?

Does anyone know how Gmail chat works ?
Is it just plain old ajax or something different.

I was viewing the console in firebug and did not see any callbacks matching the chat…

Anyone have any ideas on how it keeps the connection so smooth and fast?

I am guessing you do not keep it open all day long.

i.e open a database..... do something for 2 minutes while the user interacts... close a database at the end of the session ?
