Messaging using email server or database?

I’m developing a social networking site. Does it make more sense to implement the internal messaging between users with an email server or using database tables?

The advantages I can think of for using an email server:
1) you can CC the msg to other external emails instead of just sending to internal users.

However I’m not sure how easy it is to generate unlimited email account.

Please advise and I appreciate any feedback.

@Sid3335Mar 16.2008 — personally i'd use internal messaging and have one system email send out all the notifications (new mail etc).
