html into a php cms

i have a site that is coded in xhtml, and want to change this so that the client is able to change parts of the site themselves. is it possible to convert the site to use a cms – is it relatively simple to do or will it be very time consuming.??.

i don’t want to use software like wordpress i want to be able to code this myself using php – i have never built a cms – could anybody direct me in the right direction.
