@MrCoderFeb 21.2008 — I have been using Dreamweaver for years, in my eyes it is one of the best when working within a development team environment.

@iotaFeb 23.2008 — I like http://www.eclipse.org/pdt/ for plat-independence.

In Windows, I like PHP-Designer the best. I'm not advertising it. I'm honestly approving it from user view.

Download trail and use it.

www.mpsoftware.dk/

It has code hints, snippets....etc. You can add your own with right-click > Add selected code to Snippet. Snippets can range from php, js, css. Hey the best feature is that :

Nowadays we have to use Framework like CakePHP, in work environment, we have to use Function/Class lib that our company owns.

Once you set those library/framework path in PHP-Designer project, then you can automatically get code hints of those.

What's more you can add own your code hints by directly modifying *.xml files under PHP-Designer program folder.

I'm sure you like it.

Over 3 years, I've used dozens of (PHP-)Editors such as RapidPHP, Antechinus PHP Editor, Nusphere PhpED (it's also worth trying, I'd say), PHPEdit ...etc.

Here is a comparison review:

http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/library/os-php-ide/index.html

It's a great source for php editors:

Try telling that to a web designer that doesn't use PHP

@AnotherMuggleFeb 25.2008 — I use PHP Eclipse.

I personally really like using dw... It has everything I want in it: syntax colouring, autocompletion (which can be really time saving), file browser, auto-ftp on save, damn good site management, built in reference dictionaries, live simulation of php pages using a testing server... What more could you want?

What does "WTF dreamweaver is bad" actually mean?

This is a PHP forum, why do we care if Dreamweaver is not as good for writing ASP code?

@TheRaveFeb 26.2008 — For PHP I use PHP Designer. I absolutely love it. I used to just use textpad, which was ok until my systems got massive.

For ASP (mainly at work) I use Visual Studio 2005. Its a great tool.

I wish PHP Designer had the same project system as dreamweaver where you can edit local files then with one click publish them to the remote site or vie-sa ver-sa.

I'm yet to find another PHP based IDE that has this FTP / Project interlinking functionally.

I don't know if your familiar with the dreamweaver project system, but it allows for local and ftp base folders to be set for each project.

For example with local view I can open a file, edit it and then upload to the remote site with one click or on close of the local file.

The same can be done with remote files but downloading them to the local folder with one click.

What you end up with is 2 versions of the same folders / files that can be easily edited without having to crawl in menus uploading files.

It even supports source control, file time stamp checking and file compare using a 3rd party tool.

I use this as well. It's great!

@TrualgFeb 27.2008 — I love syn Text Editor... It has syntax highlightning (I use Multi HTML which is html, php, asp, css, js and it hasn't been confusing them out yet ?)

It has a great project system and is really easy to work with, easily customized to fit your needs, you can even add script tools so you can test them before saving, you can add your own syntax schemes if you want and add function references.

I highly recommend it, but I cant recall where I got it, just google it and you'll find it.

Actually, I like DreamWeaver. I've tried many other text editors.

However, the main issue I've found is that most text editors do not have an "upload on save" function. In other words, You can use DreamWeaver as your FTP client and your text editor at the same time (I haven't seen any text editors that can do this). When you save (Control + s), it automatically uploads it to the server. So it basically transfers everything invisibly while I work and I don't have to toggle between a text editor and an FTP client.

For the text editor settings, I keep all the pretty colors, but I disable any auto-fill settings. I don't like DreamWeaver guessing at what I'm trying to do. So I disable all of that. Also, the DreamWeaver layout view isn't much good at all for me. I strictly use the code view, so that doesn't affect me.

Two other things I like about Dreamweaver:

1. Bulk synchronization of newer files to server.

2. Do you want to overwrite files that have already been uploaded? There's a "No to all" button. This has saved me a lot of headaches when during massive uploads, the server connection has been broken due to network issues. I don't have to start over.

Two things I don't like about Dreamweaver (up through CS2, at least):

1. You can't create FTP server profiles to be used for other projects. It doesn't take much time, but you have to re-type it for each project. But once you type it in, it will be saved for that particular project.

2. If you do a find and replace on a large set of files, there's not an option to upload at once all the files that were just changed. You have to open all the files in the list and then upload them manually, or editing them slightly (like with a space) and then pressing save all to upload them.

not as overwhelming as RapidPHP. does the simple things very well.
