CMS vs Scratch

Is it worth using a CMS in replacement of writing everything on your website from scratch. I am always afraid I will pick a CMS, get to using it, then a year down the road realize i can’t do something, and will have to junk all my work. What are your opinions of CMS. I am fairly comfortable Programmer, but it seems everyone uses a CMS rather than writing from scratch.

PS. If you do recommend using a CMS, what CMS is the most useful/powerful in your opinion. The site that would be converted into a CMS if I chose to would be www.blakestoltman.com right now it is fairly simple but eventually will be full of articles.

Thanks,

Blake

@ray326Feb 04.2008 — My personal rule of thumb is better programmers write less code because they tailor existing solutions rather than creating from scratch. For a well known domain like a web site (rather than a web application) I'd always try to pick what seems to be the best match CMS and go from there. "Best match" would include both features, existing templates and supporting infrastructure.
