http://www.aesthetic-design.co.uk/proto/

• basically i’ve just started making this site in the past week with the intention of making it really interactive like a flash site.
• can you see any usability problems that i need to correct?
thanks a lot

@cgishackJan 27.2008 — I like it.. Looks nice.

The only thing is i could not use the browsers 'back button'

But I understand why.. so people might not.

Maybe a 'back' link in the top would help users.

@blue-eye-labsJan 27.2008 — it doesn't validate: you can't have a <link> tag in the body section... I couldn't check the css because it isn't linked in the header.

@solidgoldauthorJan 27.2008 — true, but you cant have a <noscript> tag in the head section, this way is slightly less buggy.

the css is valid and other than that the xhtml is valid too. ?

@solidgoldauthorJan 27.2008 — oh yeah, how come you couldn't check the css?

the main css is there in the header, the one in the body is just for the people without javascript -
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
"http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en" xml:lang="en">
<head>
<title>Aesthetic Design | James Kent | Web Design Portfolio</title>
<script type="text/javascript" src="javascripts/structure.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="javascripts/prototype.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="javascripts/scriptaculous.js"></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="css/flashstructure.css" />
</head>
@blue-eye-labsJan 27.2008 — I feel rather guilty because I checked again and saw that there was one in the header, but forgot to correct myself, sorry...

For some reason the w3validator can't see it, which is odd... anyway... I believe it's still improper to have a <link> in the body... You can still put it in the header I believe...

Anyway... it does look very nice, design wise, but the front page took ages to load...

@solidgoldauthorJan 28.2008 — i tend to take the w3c validator with a pinch of salt - they're very good at telling you what not to do, but not so good at telling you how to fix the problem.

thanks for having a look and taking such an interest in the coding!

@solidgoldauthorMar 03.2008 — i've made a big update - http://aesthetic-design.co.uk/proto/v3/ajax.html does this one work well for you?
Copy linkTweet thisAlerts:
@blue-eye-labsMar 03.2008 — I am very impressed with the ajax, in getting all the effects etc. I generally tend to shy away from using animations too heavily since I moved away from designing in flash, but you've executed it very nicely... Maybe making the pictures more obviously links to something, because (although I'm sure they will soon have a target) they don't look like links. I think it is important for it to be obvious enough to your visitors that they are links.

@solidgoldauthorMar 03.2008 — thanks a lot, i think you're probably right about the images being links, i plan to make the images sort of reveal some text and a link to work.

thanks again,

Solidgold

@solidgoldauthorMar 03.2008 — also, i come from a background of using flash, but i find that ajax/javascript is so much more fun!
