How can I make links like www.domain.com/cat1?

I’m building a website, currently I have a web page www.domain.com/view.php?id=id, I’m asked to replace this with a page on the form www.domain.com/name , is this something I can do with PHP? or does it need some mod_rewrite rules? or both?

Thank you

@smickusJan 14.2008 — You can do both yeah...

The way I do it, is in my .htaccess file I have <FILES filename> forcetype application/x-httpd-php </FILES> - then I get the directory/base name with PHP, it's probably a bad way I don't know but it works and I like it ?
