htaccess login

I want to put a htaccess username and password panel on a page rather than using the pop up. I have scripts that are supposed to do this using the format username:password@server but I cant get them to work. (I am using IE7 to view). I am sure I read a while ago that this format no longer worked (due to fraud problems) but the scripts are still all over the net including in Javascript source.

Do these scripts work? If not can/should they be removed. Or am I going mad??
Thanks

@Declan1991Jan 13.2008 — Javascript cannot make a .htaccess login page not use a popup. The thing you are talking about is bypassing that by putting the login name and password in the URL.
