PHP Developer seeks to adopt an additional language

Hello all,

I have been primarily a PHP/MYSQL developer for about 4 years now. I know a novice amount of javascript as well. I have a grasp of PHP where I use alot of functions and remember off hand alot of the default functions, but I don’t know much about creating classes.

I want to develop a windows application that will connect to a database and update information submitted using the app. I do this all the time using PHP, as I have developed many PHP based CMS systems for different websites. I’m really not sure which programming language to learn. I’ve read about so many different ones, and it would be nice to hear all of your recommendations. I was taught some visual basic before I learned PHP on my own, but it’s been about 4 years since I’ve used it.

Is it even worth learning something else? I keep hearing Ruby being mentioned all of the time, but I personally think its not even worth trying to learn.

@cngodlesauthorJan 03.2008 — Well anything but .net. I believe you need to have the whole Visual Studio .net software suite. At least with PHP, I can just code, upload, and it works.

I believe .net also costs a good bit to be in.

@smickusJan 03.2008 — Yeah .net is costly but it will get you a long way what with Microsoft ruling the world!

Python and Perl are always great... Perl is very nice.
