gif src as php

i was looking for a way to track how many newsletters have been opened, and i heard of a method where you’d input a .gif image but as its src it’d be a .php file that’ll increment a value in the DB to help keep track of the people that opened it. is this true?

@NogDogDec 13.2007 — Yes, that is a perfectly workable method. Just have the img src point to something like "counter.php", and that file would be something like:
<?php
// code here to update DB or however you want to track the hits, then...
header('Content-Type: image/gif');
readfile('local/filesystem/path/to/image.gif');
