Appending to a variable…how to?

I want to do this:

a = ‘hi’;
a .= ‘, how are you?’;

print(a);

…which would then return:

hi, how are you?

Unfortunately that’s not the proper syntax…I’m basing that off of PHP…anyone know how to do this in Javascript?

Thanks ?
