Photo Gallery Question

I currently have a photo gallery set up that is not very cross-browser friendly b/c of positioning issues. Basically when you mouseover the thumbnail a larger version pops up next to it based on relative positioning, the images seem to pop-up in unpredictable places on different browsers.

What I want to change to is a static “frame” surrounded by thumbnails, when you mouseover a thumbnail a larger/full-sized picture will appear in the stationary frame, possibly even as the background of the frame if not just an image within the frame.

Problem is, I don’t even know where to start with this, I have tried to Google it, but it seems to be impossible to find something that specific on Google results.
