htaccess/SEO question

My company has a website for various countries.

The URLs are like this:

www.dom.com/jp/ (Japan)
www.dom.com/global/us/ (US)
www.dom.com/global/uk/ (UK)
www.dom.com/global/eu/ (EU)
www.dom.com/global/fr/ (France)
www.dom.com/global/de/ (Germany)

As you can see all the non japanese sites are in the ‘global’ directory. These are the sites that I make. I only have access to the ‘global’ directory on the server, thats why the URLs look like this.

Questions:

1) If I remove the ‘global’ from the URL, will it do better for SEO?

2) Is it possible for me to remove ‘global’ using htaccess, baring in mind I dont have access to the root directory? It may be possible to arrange some access to root providing it doesnt disrupt the japan site.

@NogDogNov 03.2007 — Well, my first question would be: do you have any reliable evidence that any important search engines actually care what the URLs look like? ("That's what everyone says in the forums at XYZ.com," is not "reliable evidence.") By far the most important thing for your pages' search ranking is inbound links to your site from highly ranked sites (along with good, properly marked up content, of course). Things like meta keyword tags, link URLs, etc. will have little or no effect compared to good content and quality inbound links.
