alternative image with .htaccess

OK, I have this in my .htaccess file:
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^(.*).jpg$ images.php?filename=$1.jpg [nc]
it works 100% with jpg files, but how do I get it to work on other web graphics?

what it does, is it goes to a php file, and the php file checks to see if the image exists, and if it does it displays the image, otherwise it displays a default image that says the file doesn’t exist.

RewriteRule ^(.*.(jpg|gif|png))$ images.php?filename=$1 [nc]
