Hyperlinks to applications

Hi,

I’m using the following code to link to a spreadsheet:

[CODE]<A
href=”\Server NameDrive NameFolder NameSpreadsheet.xls”
target=_blank>Link to Spreadsheet</A>[/CODE]

This opens in an Excel browser window. I’ve been advised that because the file this is located remotely and hasn’t been loaded directly into the Intranet Server the spreadsheet will run considerably slower.

Is it possible to open a spreadsheet from an intranet hyperlink directly into the actual application i.e. not a browser window? I’m hoping this will speed up the response times of the spreadsheet/ application – I would like this to operate much like a desktop shortcut only I want people to access the spreadsheet via the intranet, not desktop.

I hope this makes sense and look forward to any responses.

@ryanbutlerOct 26.2007 — In most browser, it should ask you what you want to do, such as open or save the file. If you save it, then it could be saved locally to anyone's computer.

@MooseflyauthorOct 26.2007 — Not sure whether this is because it is an internal intranet but we don't get that message. I wouldn't want users to have to save just to open the file.

I have just identified that in the following:

Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>Tab: File Types>(Select XLS)>Advanced

There is a tick box "Browse in Same Window". If this is unticked it does exactly what I need. However this will be a default setting and our IT will not be prepared to change peoples profiles just for this so....

Is there any way, using code, that on clicking the hyperlink, I can untick the box, open then file then re-tick the box??

@ryanbutlerOct 26.2007 — Not that I know of...that would be specific to each computer. Not sure what to tell you in that case.
