element that flows across and down?

I want users to be able to upload a logo image and an optional company name. Then I want to display the logo, with the name under it if it exists, in an element of a given width and height, that flows across the page. There will be 2 or 3 elements each with an image (and possibly a ‘caption’, if that row in my DB has a company name) across the page, depending on how big the browser window is, then I need them to flow down the page. I don’t want to try to nest floated divs because the different browsers will surely trash the page. I just want elements of a given size that flow across and down, and that I can position another element inside of, I guess, so I can get the text under the logo. Why am I having so much trouble with this? Can it be done? What sort of element to use?

I’ve messed with <span> a little, but can’t seem to get the text positioned under the image.
