Can’t make changes to HTML files

Hi, newbie here.

My web designer finished my site and skipped town. The site is built on .asp, as well as HTML. I’m trying to make simple text changes, but can’t seems to gain access. My site is being hosted by 1and1.com. I sign in to 1and1, and click webfiles. I see the file I want to make changes, but when I try to click it, nothing happens. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Aimee

@KDLAOct 18.2007 — Usually, you have to change the files on your local drive first, then FTP them to your web server.

@Major_PayneOct 18.2007 — You should have a File Manager as part of your hosting package where you can edit your files online should you wish. FTP is a lot easier to use as you can edit your files, as KDLA said, on your HD and upload. Using FTP, like SmartFTP, will allow you to see your entire online (remote) file structure and your local file structure on your HD at the same time. According to 1and1.com, you have use of a Remote Desktop Connection for all their offered packages.

You do have FTP Access and a few other goodies as shown on 1and1.com's Features page. Look under Site-Building Tools for what you have to use.

The main one when you log in is probably 1and1.com's 1&1 Control Panel. Never have used this one, but it should be easy enough to navigate and I'm sure you can use the Help menu or contact support directly in some way.

@BamboobabyauthorOct 18.2007 — Thank you for the replies.

Prior to posting this, I spoke to 1and1 in India and was told the designer had put a lock on the files, that's why I can't access them. But I don't think he knows what he is talking about.

I'll go and try your suggestion. Thank you very much!

@Major_PayneOct 19.2007 — Please post back with what you find out. Never hear of someone having their own site, being able to access the files, but can't edit them. Possibly check the CHMOD settings to see if files are even editable by owner.

@KDLAOct 19.2007 — It could be that the files are integrated into some Source Offsite or other change-protection software, where you have to "check out" the file before you can edit it. Start playing with some of the buttons, and see if "check out" is an option.

@BamboobabyauthorOct 19.2007 — FYI:

The FTP worked! Thank you for your help.

The guy at 1and1 didn't know what he was talking about.

Thank you again,

Aimee

@Major_PayneOct 19.2007 — You're very welcome. I am so glad to hear that you have your problem solved. It seems you never can get the right information from level one support.
