PDF files not associating with Acrobat 8

I recently upgraded from Acrobat 7 Standard to Acrobat 8 Pro. When I go to open a pdf file, it always tries to open it in 7. Since this was an upgrade, I get an error message saying there’s no valid serial number for Acrobat 7.

I’ve tried “open with” and selecting Acrobat 8, but it doesn’t take. I can open Acrobat 8 and do a “File > Open” and it works fine. I have tried deleting the association for pdf and then re-installing 8, but that doesn’t help. I am using Windows XP Pro. Anyone else out there have the same problem?

@Robert_WellockOct 16.2007 — Try and uininstall both and then reinstall the Pro.

@WattsOct 17.2007 — I had the same problem with reader vs. writer. Another piece of software installed a more recent version of reader which then kept the older writer from opening when I needed it. Robert is right. You'll have to nuke every known version and reinstall, but that'll probably screw up your upgrade. I finally stuck cutePDF on my laptop.
