HTML + XML Site Map ???

People…

In reading over requirements for site submission to a major search engine, it was strongly suggested that an XML Site Map be created & submitted (as opposed the site itself.) Does anyone know how this works? Is this something that can be coded into a typical html page? Is it the same as the links to Site Maps seen on various home pages around the web? Is it a separate page, coded in XML?

Thanks,

@kiwibritOct 01.2007 — Google's advice, which seems comprehensive. I have not used one myself, since everything I want Google to access on my site is reachable through nav links.

Sitemaps are particularly beneficial when users can't reach all areas of a website through a browseable interface.
@ryanbutlerOct 01.2007 — The reason an XML Sitemap is favored is because for once in the lifetime of the web, all major search engines are supporting this new feature. You can purchase XML Sitemaps.com but I wasn't terribly impressed when I purchased it. I use Google's XML site map and it works fine. Basically, a UNIX box pings Google nightly to inform them of what pages have been added/deleted/modified, which is the second reply was about.

How about this one?:

http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

This actually generates the xml sitemap for you...all the user has to do is plug in their url. Do you think the Google xml software download is better?

And, Robert...are you saying this is not necessary...& it's OK to simply submit the basic site itself? I thought that some search engines only accept xml's now? I was really ticked off to learn (I must add)...after carefully constructing my meta description & meta keywords...that many search engines do not peruse this info any longer. Funny thing is...the meta description always comes up in a search of my site.

Thanks very much...you've all been very helpful,

@kiwibritOct 03.2007 — Will the site map generated buy crawling be complete - I don't think (but am not 100% certain) that it will pick up those pages that are not linked by browsable links. I suppose the only way to know is to try it and see. xml site maps are not something I have done, though I have been thinking about it. I was interested to see Robert's reservations; I would find it helpful if he enlarged on it.

this is what I use, though I am not sure the sitemap is doing anything for me in the search engines. ?
