installing json using PEAR

guys,
I’m trying to install json using PEAR. I did a pear install json-1.2.1.tgz. but I get a error which says

The extension ‘zlib’ couldn’t be found.
Please make sure your version of PHP was built with ‘zlib’ support.

I have zlib support enabled and I’ve verified it by echoing phpinfo().
any ideas how to resolve this?
