Frames and SEO

I was going to give a guy a few tips on his new website, and ran into an intersting situation. The URL he gave me is http://www.cimagery.ca/, which you’ll notice is a frameset. His actual site is at http://home.cogeco.ca/~capo139//index.html, and he does not control the frameset page. Apparently his provider does the site this way (not sure why) and he didn’t even realize he was “captured” within this frameset.

Will he have any SEO problems with being within a frame in this setup?

Thanks
Dave

@Compguy_PeteSep 24.2007 — I think the address being used is the actual server file system address not the "web address".

Because if you go to http://www.cimagery.ca/faq.html you come up with the same page as you would normally.

THe only pages I found that "needed" this long address was for the gallery's not sure why... I'll leave that to you... but here is the address http://home.cogeco.ca/~capo139//gallery_bw/viewer.swf

Side track moment below...

Next I would remove that silly rightclick script.... he's not saving anything from anyone by having it. I run into this all the time with photographers, they're worried about they're photos. But none of them use watermarks... People who steal images are not going to be stopped by a no right click script. It's also not active on all pages.

So the long and short of it... he should be fine but frames are never a good idea when your looking for better rankings.

@tracknutauthorSep 24.2007 — Thanks Pete, but maybe we're on different wavelengths. If I go to the URL being used publicly for this site, http://www.cimagery.ca/, I get a framset page. All of his pages that I click on (FAQ, Gallery, etc) are served up through this frameset page (and the url in the browser stays at http://www.cimagery.ca/, what many folks like to see).

So my question is, since this framset page is not his own (apparently he has to request changes to it from his service provider), and it doesn't have any text on it that a search engine might use to rank him, is he having SEO issues? Or does the fact that his own pages at http://home.cogeco.ca/~capo139//index.html have text and such on them, mean that search engines will rank him just the same.

Really the reason I'm particularly curious is that he was unaware of being "captured" in this matrix of a frameset above him, and I'm wondering whether this method of hosting is causing him and the various other customers some unique SEO issues.

BTW I agree with you on the right click issue. I do photography for a living and have to admit I have a right click disable on my site as well. I have big watermarks on the images, and just can't quite convince myself to remove the click disable script.

@Compguy_PeteSep 24.2007 — No were on the same wavelength... I'm just not sure you understand what I'm saying.

He doesnt have to ask for anything. I could come up with a similar address for any of my hosting clients as well.

The url issue on the address bar has more to do with the coding for the frames than anything else.

If you look at my example in my last post you'll see that the pages are the same... so there is nothign to ask for from the provider, unless they're the ones who created the frames.

His provider are the ones who created the frames - he didn't even know the frameset existed until I told him. He is able to ask them to add meta tags to this frameset, but when I told him of the missing doctype and the misspelling of (noframes), he quickly lost track of what page I was referring to since he didn't know it was there.

In any event, I get the feeling that this will have no effect on his SEO, so I probably don't need to chase this any further. Thanks for your help Pete.
