Maybe an HTML ? instead of Graphics.

I have a question posted on the graphics part of this forum about being able to take an image on the site and have it print out at an 8×11.5 normal piece of paper. If you think you can help, please read the post from me in the graphics forum. I so far am pretty close to the top.

@WebJoelSep 12.2007 — I saw your post on graphics.

A web-image is generally 72-dpi, so if the actual size of the image is 4-inches wide/3-inches tall, it is 288 dots-per-inch. Nothing except PhotoShop is going to change that if the intent is to hard-copy print this. Bear in mind that 'photographic quality images' begins at around 500-pixels per inch, upwards. The only way you're going to get a 4" by 3" actual-size image to print 8 1/2 by 11, is through interpolation of existing pixels ('stretching/faking/filling-in'), - constructing new data points from known data points. For this, a photo-editiing software like PhotoShop will be required and you will have to first bump-up the number of pixels-per-inch from the 72-maybe, to at least 300dpi for "print quality" and 500-700+ dpi to get "photographic quality".

If this is for a web page, best practice might be to use the smaller 'thumbnail image' for media="screen", and have the 'click to print' point to a full-size (we're talking several MB-size) quality image for media="print".

@jozziejauthorSep 12.2007 — Hi WebJoel,

I think you misunderstood, I was teasing at the current print size that my kids would be bringing in an worksheet that is 2 foot by 4 foot. What I am really trying to accomplish is allow my kids that forget their work to go on our class site and print a copy of the image at home. I scanned the paper and resized it in paintshop pro to 8.5 x 11 ( goofed that measurement up in other post i put 8 x 11.5) the image info tells me the size is 150 dpi ant at 1141x1462 pixels. When I open the image on the site, it looks normal, but when they hit print the size is huge...I am trying to be able for them to print it out and it be a normal size worksheet on a regular 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.

@WebJoelSep 12.2007 — That sounds more as if the printer isn't set to force it to print to a desired size. Can you specify the height/width to the source print to? If the image is dense enough (enough dpi) it should support being 'shrunk to fit' a defined page-size and I think this is a printer function.

@KDLASep 12.2007 — Sometimes browsers resize an image to fit within a page for a couple of reasons:

- the person coding the webpage isn't able to resize the image manually, and instead relies upon the browser to do it for them by specifying a percentage height and width in the coding.

- the image is too large for the browser's default image rendering (if you mouse over a linked image in IE, you'll get some arrows to expand it to its actual size).

Also, when resizing things (and using resolution to do so, rather than dimensions), the resolution will determine the size of the graphic. Images resized to have higher resolutions tend to be larger graphics. It's a common mistake of some graphic designers: to increase the resolution to meet printing quality demands.

The dimensions you mentioned (1141x1462) will, most probably, exceed the page width of a printed document. I'd guess images measuring 600 - 650px wide would fit on the printed page.

Success!
