That's exactly what it's like. Domain names are real estate on the Web. They are your Web address, just like you have a house address.

@WebJoelAug 23.2007 — A lot of the really good ones were bought-up when they first became available, and there is this 'international intellectual properties act' (I do not recall the exact name of the law) that came around and can take away a domain that someone legitimatly registered 10 or so years ago.

What comes to mind is the time during the Bill Clinton presidency when we first heard the name "Minoca Lewinski". Someone had the foresight to register this domain name, and later was able to sell it successfully for many thousands of dollars. Good on 'im.

But 'intellectual property' in regards to domain registration means that just because your name is "Johnny" and maybe you are an online bailbondsman (you loan cash to keep people from spending time in jail awaiting their day in court), you cannot register the doman name "johnnycash(dot)com" because 99.9% of people whom hear the name "Johnny Cash" do not immediately thing of bail bondsman cash loans, they think of the country music legend & singer.

I think that there is an extention for Firefox called "JohnnyCache"... wondering for the sake of jurisprudence how long that is gonna last... We are a very litigacious people, no doubt about it.

Right now here in Toronto there is a litigation going on in regards to use of the word "toronto2", because a major newspaper uses the domain "toronto", any similarity is capitalizing, ito.

A more famous case is what happened when we ran out of "1-800" telephone number combinations, and created was the "1-888" series of toll-free telephone numbers. -You just knew it would happen... someone tried to 'steal' the name of "1-888-FLOWERS" ("1-800-FLOWERS" is a well-know brand-name of flowershop gifts). I have to assume that there is a website of the same name. I think they are still fighting this.

Yeah... it is big business. Brand recognition and all. :p

@sitesbuysellAug 29.2007 — You can find all prices for sales& all tld's at a site called NameBio.com - many dot com's have sold for several million. Even generic .info's are starting to fetch high prices... Travel.info recently sold for over $100,000 & sex.info sold for about $200,000 a few weeks ago.

@stacywacyAug 29.2007 — Some people make a living out of buying domains and selling them for a profit.
