multiple web stores from one database

I was curious if this is even possible…without much customization. I am working for someone with web store already set up. However they want to setup multiple small sub sites with the SAME EXACT products and categories etc…just different look, all using the same database. So for example site a would have all categories and products display…site b may only have 3 of those categories display and only half of the products in each category show. Ordering etc could all go to the same admin control panel. I know there are turn key shopping cart solutions out there, i was curious if there was software that could run multiple store fronts. Is this even possible, or would you have to have different database for each store. The key here is less maintenance over more customization. In other words if the category and product price and info have to be exactly the same on both sites that is fine, as long as you only have to edit the information once to affect both sites. Sorry if this seems confusing but any information on multiple store fronts from single database would be appreciated. Preferred platform would be php mysql linux
